I cannot overstate the importance of keeping healthy feet as you age.

In fact there is a direct correlation between the condition of your feet and your longevity.

People with lots of feet problems:

  • become very unstable making them prone to devastating falls;
  • are more likely to get cracks and sores which can lead to infection.

To keep your feet in top shape, there are three essential steps to follow.

These simple habits can keep your feet healthy, happy, and pain-free for years to come. Let’s dive in!

1. Strengthen and Stretch Your Feet

Your feet, like any other part of your body, need exercise and stretching to stay strong and flexible.

A lot of people don’t realise that by wearing shoes a lot and walking on flat surfaces, our intrinsic feet muscles (let’s call them our Foot Soldiers!), become weak.

Helping to build these muscles stronger will help them to keep you upright for years to come.

  • Foot Rolls: Roll a cork ball  (as above, or similar) under your foot to massage the arch and release any tension that may be building up. This also promotes better circulation.
  • Calf Raises: Stand tall and raise up onto your toes, then slowly lower yourself back down. This exercise strengthens the calves and the muscles in the feet, improving balance and overall foot health.

Incorporating foot stretches into your routine is just as important as strengthening exercises.

2. Get Healthy Feet By Wearing The Right Shoes

Shoes aren’t just a fashion statement—they’re a critical part of foot health.

The right shoes provide support, cushioning, and protection to your feet, reducing the risk of injuries and long-term damage.
When choosing shoes, look for:

  • Proper Fit: Too tight or too loose? No thanks! You need a shoe that gives your feet the room they need to move comfortably. Aim for about a thumb’s width of space from the tip of your longest toe to the end of the shoe.
    Ask the store attendant to measure you properly with a brannock device to be sure.
  • Arch Support: Whether you have flat feet or high arches, proper arch support is non-negotiable. Shoes with good arch support help align your posture and prevent foot fatigue.
    Feel is also very important, you don’t want a pair of supportive shoes that sit in the bottom of your cupboard.
  • Cushioning: Shoes with adequate cushioning reduce the impact on your joints, especially if you’re walking, running, or standing for long periods. Goldilocks principle here: not too soft, and not too firm.
  • Breathability: Let your feet breathe! Mesh uppers or other breathable materials help keep your feet dry and comfortable, reducing the risk of fungal infections.

Bonus Tip! Make sure to walk around the shop in the shoes you like for around 5 minutes. Get a good idea of how they will feel.

3. Clean and Moisturised Feet are Healthy Feet.

It’s simple but essential: clean, dry, and moisturised feet are happy feet.

Hygiene plays a huge role in preventing issues like blisters, athlete’s foot, and dry, cracked heels. A little care goes a long way.

Here’s how to keep your feet in tip-top shape:

  • Wash Daily: Clean your feet with warm water and mild soap every day. Pay attention to the spaces between your toes, where moisture can get trapped and lead to fungal growth.
  • Dry Thoroughly: After washing, make sure your feet are completely dry—especially between your toes. Damp feet are a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
  • Moisturise: Keep your feet soft and smooth by applying a thick, non-scented moisturiser to your feet daily. Focus on the heels, which tend to get dry and cracked. Just be careful not to apply moisturiser between your toes, as it can cause excess moisture buildup.
